8 Tips to Discover Your Fashion Identity
Are you part of the I don’t have anything to wear community? Come closer, this blog is for you.
I remember when I used to obsessively buy whatever trendy pieces were in style. Crop tops, boyfriend jeans - you name it, I had to have it! A few weeks later, I would be over those pieces and desperately searching for the next trend. It was an endless cycle of spending too much money on things I didn’t actuallly need.
The journey to finding your fashion identity can feel frustrating and confusing. However, once you discover your personal style, getting dressed will be so much fun. You will gain confidence in self-expression through fashion, and your unique style will shine through.
Here are eight tips to help you uncover your fashion identity:
1. Get to know your body type
Determine if you have an hourglass, pear, rectangle, inverted triangle, or apple body shape. This will allow you to focus your search on clothes that will flatter your figure and make you look great. For example, if you have an hourglass shape, look for fitted dresses and tops with defined waists.

2. Find inspiration online
Yes! I know you love spending time online. Good news! You can put your browsing skills to good use when it comes to fashion. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest offer a wealth of style inspirations. Pay attention to patterns - are you drawn to minimalist styles or bold prints? Specific colors or neutrals? Certain fabrics and materials? This visual inspiration will help define your preferences. This way, you will avoid impulse purchases that you end up wearing once a year or, worse, never.
Note: An impulse purchase means purchasing something without planning to do so beforehand.
3. Step outside your comfort zone
Do not be afraid to spread your wings and show your colors. Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to amazing fashion discoveries. Do not be afraid to experiment with styles you do not normally wear. Maybe you always stick to neutrals but are attracted to colorful pieces. Give that colorful top or loud print a try! After all, you will not know if something suits you until you give it a shot. Express your unique style!
4. Ruthlessly declutter
Be honest - how many items in your closet have you not worn in over a year? Or pieces you bought for someone else’s style? Give away or sell anything that does not align with your current fashion identity goals.
Ask yourself:
- Does this fit my body type?
- Does this match my current style?
- Would I buy this today?
Use the space to invest in new pieces that better reflect who you are.
5. Use the TikTok three-word method
Fashion stylist Allison Bornstein created this tactic to crystallize your style. Choose three words that describe your fashion sense:
Current style
- what you wear most nowAspirational style
- what you wish to wear moreEmotional style
- how you want to feel in your clothes
For example, my words are:
Edgy
- because I own a lot of tees, jeans, and cargo pantsElegant
- because I am a sucker for elegant gowns and bossy looks and would like to wear them moreConfident
- because I always want to feel and look sophisticated
Use your words as a filter when shopping to get exactly what you want.
6. Take your time with online shopping
One benefit of online shopping is getting to browse at your own pace without pressure. Avoid rushing into purchases without clarity of what you are looking for.
If you are easily influenced by persuasive marketers (like me), you can find all your favorite pieces online and order them in the comfort of your home, office, or wherever you are. Just ensure they are in your size.
7. Play fashion stylist at home
On a free afternoon, have fun mixing and matching items in your closet. Try on different combinations and style pieces in new ways. Snap photos of your favorite outfits to reference later.
Experimenting will spark creativity and allow you to see what flatters your body.
8. Stay true to yourself
Think of fashion as your personal coloring book, and you have the crayons. Wear what truly tells your story. Do not be a victim of the pressure of trends or wear things you do not genuinely want to wear. Also, do not hold back from wearing something you love out of fear of judgment. Embrace your individuality and create a style that reflects your true self. You are the designer of your own fashion story, so go ahead and create!
We hope these tips help you uncover your personal fashion identity. It is an evolving process, but a rewarding one. Share your style journey using the hashtag #stunnersgalleria. We love to see your outfits once you discover your signature look.
